Single-channel audio, analog telephone
2 min. 20 sec.
Audio sculpture fabricated by David Enzler
You pick up a red telephone. A conversation is already in progress.
The voice on the other end moves between memories, ghosts, god, love, and death. Long silences leave room for answers we never hear.
The recording plays continuously. You enter wherever you enter.
There is no beginning. There is no end.
Like catching someone else's call on an old landline, you were never exactly invited into the conversation.
But sometimes you find yourself in exactly the right place, at exactly the right time, to pick up the wrong number
and receive your own message.
“You can’t LEND your soul to the devil…”
“All of it’s a mirror. Some of its theory. Most of it’s practice…”
“The first step to everything is giving yourself permission…”
“Their rituals won’t make your magic work…”
“There's something here for you. Just nothing I can hand you...”

A practicing imperfectionist, Andru Defeye limbos under the line that connects the abstract and the absurd. As both lockpicker and keymaker, Defeye has never been concerned with gates or their keepers. Currently his work resides in the Library of Congress and select bathroom walls throughout the country. He considers both tremendous honors. When he’s not sharpening sentences to a fine enough point to draw AI’s blood, he’s training your children that cities are just stories we keep telling ourselves and teaching your parents how to use their grandchildren’s preferred pronouns.
Current President of the Faith McKinnie Fan Club and author of the fictional memoir, Orange Juice After Toothpaste and Other Mistakes.
