Flower Closet, 2026
This flower closet shows an imaginative world spilling out into our own reality. It is a portal to a place where things are familiar but beautifully different. A place in between the expectation of reality and the haze of a dream. Life takes its own form and spirals beyond the imagination. Flowers stretch and yawn, and the grass is a bioluminescent guide that ushers travelers through a liminal world where the universe and terra coexist inside the same space
"My last name is Flores. In Spanish it means “flowers”. This tribute to my father, who gave me this name, is to acknowledge the support I got from him throughout my life to pursue my passions, and to give me a better life than he had. I remember playing outside as a kid and making up my own fantastical places, just like this one. And he always helped me to build it. He guided me, and gave me direction. And let me fail when I needed to learn lessons. There was never too much for me to ask him, he was always there when I needed him. Even when I didn't know I needed him. He taught me to believe in myself, and move through life into unknown places."
Matthew Flores is a Sacramento based multidisciplinary artist, primarily using ceramics, video, and photography as his mediums, although he is always exploring new forms and new ways of bringing his ideas to life. He pulls ideas from places, pop culture, influential people in his life, and lived experiences. An objective when he is creating any type of work is to subvert expectations. To take an idea and try to find an unusual way of adapting it using different mediums. Or taking a medium and trying to explore new ways of using it.
